Cultures of Adaptation Network (CAN)

European Centre of Bangladesh Knowledge (ECBK)

What is BCKB about?

The European Centre of Bangladesh Knowledge (ECBK) is a proposed platform at Utrecht University for interdisciplinary research, education, policy dialogue and knowledge exchange on Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s experience of climate adaptation and development offers insights relevant beyond South Asia. Yet research and knowledge exchange on Bangladesh in Europe remain fragmented across institutions and disciplines. The proposed Centre aims to connect researchers, policymakers, development practitioners and diaspora communities, linking research with policy and practice.

Who is behind the initiative?

The initiative is envisaged through the Cultures of Adaptation Network (CAN), within Utrecht University’s Pathways to Sustainability strategic theme.

What do we aim to do?

The proposed Centre aims to develop a long-term European hub for knowledge on Bangladesh, supporting partnerships that advance climate resilience and inclusive, sustainable development. Planned activities include:

  • Research collaboration: Joint research projects and funding applications across Bangladesh, Europe and North America.
  • Education and exchange: Student exchanges, visiting scholars, joint doctoral supervision and professional training.
  • Policy dialogue: Conferences, workshops and forums connecting research with policy and development practice.
  • Public engagement: Dialogue with diaspora communities and partners in the public and private sectors.
