ICCCAD Workshop on Gender, Non-Migration, and Climate Change
On May 10, 2023 the ICCCAD workshop on gender, non-migration, and climate change took place in the Independent University in Dhaka, Bangladesh in collaboration with International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD). The workshop was organized by Dr. Bishawjit Mallick (Utrecht University), Prof. Dr. Ajay Bailey (Utrecht University) and Prof. Saleemul Huq (ICCCAD).
The workshop has collected insights from experts from various organizations and universities on the female decision to remain in place throughout generations despite climate risks. This included the relationship between hazards-specific local adaptation approaches and females’ decisions to stay at risk. The workshop culminated in a commentary on the gender perspective of local-scale non-migration choices as an adaptive strategy by at-risk populations, guided by five key questions designed for discussion:
- How voluntary is female (non-)migration in different settings and types of households?
- How does female (non-)migration differ intergenerationally across environmental hazards?
- By what mechanism does female (non-)migration influence the well-being of households?
- What adaptive capacities (individual and community levels) can reduce the impact of climate change-induced non-migration against women?
- What are potential entry points to design interventions in a more integrated manner that supports gender-inclusive CC adaptation for sustainable development?
